Hello,

Have you ever dreamed of visiting Korea?

Whether you’re planning a trip to Seoul, hoping to visit family, or simply want to experience Korea someday, knowing a little Korean can make your trip even more enjoyable.

You don’t need to speak perfect Korean. Even being able to greet someone, ask where something is, or understand a simple answer can make everyday experiences more comfortable.

Today, let’s review some Beginner Level Korean that you can actually use while traveling.

🧳 Beginner Korean Grammar: 에 + 있다 / 없다

에

e

에 is used with a place to show where someone or something is.

We commonly use it with:

있어요

isseoyo
to be / to exist

and

없어요

eopseoyo
to not be / to not exist

For example:

서울에 있어요.

Seoure isseoyo.
I’m in Seoul.

호텔이 서울에 있어요.

Hoteli Seoure isseoyo.
The hotel is in Seoul.

친구가 한국에 있어요.

Chinguga Hangug-e isseoyo.
My friend is in Korea.

To ask where something is:

어디에 있어요?

Eodie isseoyo?
Where is it?

🇰🇷 Useful Korean for Traveling

Imagine you’re walking around Seoul and looking for something.

You can ask:

화장실이 어디에 있어요?

Hwajangsiri eodie isseoyo?
Where is the restroom?

지하철역이 어디에 있어요?

Jihacheol-yeogi eodie isseoyo?
Where is the subway station?

호텔이 어디에 있어요?

Hoteli eodie isseoyo?
Where is the hotel?

You might hear:

저쪽에 있어요.

Jeojjoge isseoyo.
It’s over there.

Or:

여기에 있어요.

Yeogie isseoyo.
It’s here.

Or:

저기에 있어요.

Jeogie isseoyo.
It’s over there.

These are simple expressions, but they can be incredibly useful when traveling.

🏙️ Modern Korean Travel Culture

Korea is a fascinating place to explore because modern life and history exist side by side.

In Seoul, you can take the subway to a modern shopping district and, not far away, find a historic palace or traditional neighborhood.

You might visit:

🏙️ 명동
Myeongdong
A popular shopping and food area

🏯 경복궁
Gyeongbokgung
A historic royal palace

🌊 한강
Hangang
The Han River

🛍️ 남대문시장
Namdaemun Sijang
Namdaemun Market

And after exploring, you can stop for Korean food, shopping, or entertainment.

This combination of traditional and modern Korea is one of the things many visitors find fascinating.

🍜 A Little Korean Can Make a Big Difference

Imagine you’re at a Korean restaurant and want to find the restroom.

Instead of simply pointing, you can ask:

화장실이 어디에 있어요?

Hwajangsiri eodie isseoyo?
Where is the restroom?

The staff might answer:

저쪽에 있어요.

Jeojjoge isseoyo.
It’s over there.

You may not be having a long conversation, but you’ve just used Korean successfully!

These small moments are part of what makes learning a language exciting.

💬 A Natural Travel Conversation

A: 실례합니다. 화장실이 어디에 있어요?
Sillyehamnida. Hwajangsiri eodie isseoyo?
Excuse me. Where is the restroom?

B: 저쪽에 있어요.
