Korean New Coinage: ์ŠคํŽ™ (Spec)

Screen Shot 2017-02-19 at 11.55.17 AM.png

์‹ ์กฐ์–ด (New Coinage)

์ŠคํŽ™ : The proof of various abilities which job seekers have

‘์ŠคํŽ™’ is from the English word ‘spec’ which is the contraction of ‘specification’, and it means the characteristic, function or performance of a certain product. ย By the way, we began to use the word ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ as the meaning of ‘์ทจ์—…์„ ์œ„ํ•ด ๊ฐ–์ถ”๊ณ  ์žˆ๋Š” ๋Šฅ๋ ฅ (ability which is needed for finding a job), by comparing the job seekers to the products as if they are the products sold to the company. ย We often say ‘์ŠคํŽ™์ด ์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค (spec is good/bad)’or ‘์ŠคํŽ™์„ ์Œ“๋‹ค (build a spec)’, and we use it for anything needed for finding a job such as in ‘์ŠคํŽ™ ๊ด€๋ฆฌ (spec management)’, ‘์™ธ๋ชจ ์ŠคํŽ™ (appearance spec)’ and ‘ํ•ฉ๊ฒฉ ์ŠคํŽ™ (pass spec)’.

Lately, the word ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ย earned a negative meaning as people useย ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ for almost everything which would help with finding a job such as school ties, regionalism, blood ties and even appearance which does not have anything to do with ability or skill.

Korean Conversation: ๋ฌธ์ž ์˜จ ์ค„ ๋ชฐ๋ž์–ด (I didn’t notice that I got a text message)

๋ฌธ์ž ์˜จ ์ค„ ๋ชฐ๋ž์–ด (I didn’t notice that I got a text message) : This expression has the meaning that โ€œ์ด์ œ์„œ์•ผ ์•Œ์•˜๋‹ค (I just noticed late)” rather than โ€œ๋ชฐ๋ž๋‹ค (did not know).โ€

์ผ์ƒํšŒํ™” (Korean Conversation)

Just after realizing that you got a message, you can say “๋ฌธ์ž ์˜จ ์ค„ ๋ชฐ๋ž์–ดย (I didn’t notice that I got a text message)”. As such, you can say “์ „ํ™” ์˜จ ์ค„ ๋ชฐ๋ž์–ด (I didn’t know I got a call)” and “๋ฉ”์ผ ๋ณด๋‚ธ ์ค„ ๋ชฐ๋ž์–ด (I didn’t know you sent me an email)” after noticing that you got an email or a call. ย This expression emphasizes the meaning, “์ด์ œ์„œ์•ผ ์•Œ์•˜๋‹ค (I just noticed late)ย rather than โ€œ๋ชฐ๋ž๋‹ค (did not know)”.

Korean New Coinage: ์™„์†Œ (Completely precious)

Screen Shot 2016-11-18 at 8.04.54 AM.png

์‹ ์กฐ์–ด (New Coinage)

์™„์†Œ (Wanso) : be completely precious

“์™„์†Œ” is an abbreviated form of “์™„์ „ ์†Œ์ค‘ํ•˜๋‹ค (์™„์ „ [completely] + ์†Œ์ค‘ํ•˜๋‹ค [to be precious]). ย A few years ago, some Koreans started calling their favorite celebrities in TV series or movies as “์™„์†Œ”. ย However, just recently,ย “์™„์†Œ” is widely used not only for persons but also for certain items. ย “์™„์ „ [complete]” refers to “the condition that something is flawless and as great as it possibly can be”.

“์™„์†Œ” is usually followed by a noun such asย “์™„์†Œ ์•„์ดํ…œ(my precious item)”,ย “์™„์†Œ๋‚จ(my precious man)”,ย “์™„์†Œ๋…€(my precious lady)”, ย etc.
