Korean New Coinage: ์ŠคํŽ™ (Spec)

์ŠคํŽ™ : The proof of various abilities which job seekers have

‘์ŠคํŽ™’ is from the English word ‘spec’ which is the contraction of ‘specification’, and it means the characteristic, function or performance of a certain product. ย By the way, we began to use the word ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ as the meaning of ‘์ทจ์—…์„ ์œ„ํ•ด ๊ฐ–์ถ”๊ณ  ์žˆ๋Š” ๋Šฅ๋ ฅ (ability which is needed for finding a job), by comparing the job seekers to the products as if they are the products sold to the company. ย We often say ‘์ŠคํŽ™์ด ์ข‹๋‹ค/๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค (spec is good/bad)’or ‘์ŠคํŽ™์„ ์Œ“๋‹ค (build a spec)’, and we use it for anything needed for finding a job such as in ‘์ŠคํŽ™ ๊ด€๋ฆฌ (spec management)’, ‘์™ธ๋ชจ ์ŠคํŽ™ (appearance spec)’ and ‘ํ•ฉ๊ฒฉ ์ŠคํŽ™ (pass spec)’.

Lately, the word ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ย earned a negative meaning as people useย ‘์ŠคํŽ™’ for almost everything which would help with finding a job such as school ties, regionalism, blood ties and even appearance which does not have anything to do with ability or skill.

Korean Idiom: ์• ๋ฅผ ๋จน๋‹ค (have considerable difficulties and feel extremely tired

์• ๋ฅผ ๋จน๋‹ค (have a hard time (literally, ‘eat Ae’)) : have considerable difficulties andย feel extremely tired.

Screen Shot 2017-01-08 at 11.01.54 AM.png

๊ด€์šฉํ‘œํ˜„ (Korean Idiom)

From an old Korean saying, “์•  (Ae)” literally means the “intestine”. Now, the word has come to mean “๊ทผ์‹ฌ์— ์‹ธ์—ฌ ์ดˆ์กฐํ•œ ๋งˆ์Œ์† (one’s nervous mind that is filled with worries)” and “๋งˆ์Œ๊ณผ ๋ชธ์˜ ๋ชน์‹œ ์ˆ˜๊ณ ๋กœ์›€ (extremely tired mind and body)”. ย “์• ๋ฅผ ๋จน๋‹ค (to eat Ae)” means “to have considerable difficulties”, or simply put, “to do backbreaking work”. ย Because this expression is used when we arduously completed something uneasy, we need to clarify the reasons of eating Ae by using the following sentence structure: “-๋•Œ๋ฌธ์— ์• ๋ฅผ ๋จน๋‹ค (to eat Ae, because of something)”, “-๋А๋ผ ์• ๋ฅผ ๋จน๋‹ค (to eat Ae when doing something)”. However, these expressions with Ae are not used with the elderly.

Korean Conversation: ์—Š๊ทธ์ œ ๊ฐ™์€๋ฐ (It is just like yesterday)

์—Š๊ทธ์ œ ๊ฐ™์€๋ฐ (It is just like yesterday) : This expression means that somethingย which happened long time ago seems as if it just happened yesterday or the dayย before yesterday.

Screen Shot 2016-12-08 at 11.02.01 AM.png

์ผ์ƒํšŒํ™” (Korean Conversation)

When we feel like time flies, we use the expression “์—Š๊ทธ์ œ ๊ฐ™์€๋ฐ (it seems like yesterday or the day before yesterday)”. ย It means something that happened so long ago but it seems to you that it just happened yesterday or the day before yesterday. ย It has a nuance that you feel little bit sad or surprised for the days going so quickly without noticing it.
