👩🏻‍💼 A Little Korean Culture: Korean Workplace Life

If you’ve watched a K-drama set in an office, you’ve probably noticed that Korean workplace culture is about much more than just work.

One fun example is 회식 (hoesik).

회식

Hoesik
Company dinner / work gathering

After work, coworkers may get together for a meal, drinks, or simply to spend time together.

You might hear:

오늘 회식 있어요.

Oneul hoesik isseoyo.
We have a company dinner today.

And lunch can be social, too.

같이 점심 먹어요?

Gachi jeomsim meogeoyo?
Would you like to have lunch together?

같이 (gachi) means “together,” and you’ll hear it frequently in everyday Korean.

Then there’s coffee!

커피 마실래요?

Keopi masillaeyo?
Would you like to have coffee?

In Korea, grabbing coffee with a coworker can be a simple way to chat, build relationships, or take a quick break together.

And if you’ve watched enough K-dramas, you already know that a coffee invitation can sometimes turn into a much longer conversation! ☕️

🇰🇷 Titles Matter, Too

Another interesting part of Korean workplace culture is how people address each other.

Instead of always using someone’s first name, Koreans often use their job title + 님.

For example:

팀장님
Timjangnim
Team leader

부장님
Bujangnim
Department manager

The suffix 님 (nim) adds respect.

This is one reason Korean can be fascinating to learn: the language itself reflects relationships and social situations.

As you learn more Korean, you’ll start understanding not only what people say, but also why they say it that way.
